Aragorn’s Companions

Aragron is our three-year-old registered Border Leicester ram.  He has great bloodlines and throws a wonderful lamb with a long top and beautiful wool.  He is still kind of the wild, young thing but has settled down a lot this past year.  Three breeding groups this fall… we are so excited… only about 147 days to go before the first lamb hits the ground this spring.

Poseidon’s Girls

Our five-year-old colored ram, Poseidon, is a Cotswald – Border Leicester – Coopworth – Wensleydale cross.  He is the most agressive of the rams, and you learn very quickly not to turn your back on him.  He is very large and can deliver a real wallop if you are not paying attention.  Let’s just say he definitely commands respect.  He also produces an amazing fleece, and vigorous lambs with beautiful, long curly locks.

Ready… Set… Go

We were so excited Saturday to get the last of our 32 breeding ewes all set for breeding; all the hooves were trimmed and crutching finished.  We put up (and later took down) 820 feet of temporary fencing for moving lanes; moved dogs, dog houses and watering troughs.  We were excited that we got the ram’s bellies trimmed and marking harnesses on before dark, and were not working by truck light. We were even more thrilled that it was a beautiful day and not 20 degrees, not raining or snowing, as in previous years.
Today, we are proud to present the first of the 2011 breeding groups – Liam’s Ladies.  Liam is our six year old registered Border Leicester, purchased from Kelly at Spring Breeze Farm as a yearling.  He has great lineage and a super disposition.  He throws a beautiful lamb with a long top and lovely wool.

Some R and R

This handsome line-up of rams is enjoying a well-deserved period of rest and relaxation. Despite the severe winter, the rams did a fabulous job during breeding season. There are just a couple of stragglers left and lambing season will be over. These guys will be spending the summer getting ‘fat and sassy’. What a life!

Two more lambs to share

Wednesday afternoon Princess delivered a beautiful little ewe which we are excited about. Her lambs are always the fastest growers, and this is her first ewe so we shall see if she grows as well as her ram lambs did. She is still damp in this picture so it is not the best:100_8064 Then, early this morn, around 1 a.m., we got our first purebred border leicester… a ram lamb from Kelly:100_8069 A rather handsome little fellow who will hopefully be a great stud ram for someone’s fiber farm.

Our First Lamb of 2010 has Arrived

Our first lamb was born last night: a robust little 9 lb 12 oz ram lamb who is three-quarters border leicester and has the sweetest little face and quiet Baaaa!

After the challenging winter and amidst our healing…how fitting is it that our first lamb #1001 is the son of #801 Patience, and grandson of #21 Hope?

We may have to break our “Do Not Name the Rams” rule for this little guy.
Anyone have name suggestions?

Working Women’s Wednesdays

Wednesday was another BUSY workday. We moved Poseidon in with a small group of ewes in the nursery area near the barn. We can keep a close eye on him there and see how he gets along. We have not put a marking harness on him as we are wary that there might be some lingering injury from the ram nonsense. He has grown into a really beautiful… err handsome… fellow. Must make sure to take some updated pictures this weekend.

We also managed to get quite a few more lambs’ fleeces skirted. Watch for them in the shop. We are trying to get a few things posted each day.

The Month of Thanksgiving – Thirteen

Today we are thankful for our new yearling ram, Aragorn!
He is a registered Border Leicester from Sara Beamer’s flock. We think he is a beauty… it’s all about that Roman nose!
The Naming Shepherdess is especially thankful for Aragorn, as this opens up a whole new chapter in the Naming Book. (…thinking Galadriel, Eowyn, Elwing, Celebrian and of course, Arwen).
