solstice to solstice :: light

light

this is the light of our childhood winter nights

electric service was unreliable especially in the winter
many times we were without electricity for hours or even days
this light is a witness to countless jigsaw puzzles and books read aloud;
games played and stories told

this light is a connection to those that came before us
to our grandparents, great grandparents and great, great grandparents
little did they know when they carefully packed it to move in 1890
that this light would touch the lives of six generations of our farm family

the original chimney has been replaced
it has a small hole in the top of the fount that has been filled with lead a couple generations back; but to us, this oil lamp is a treasure
this is the light of winter

Weekend Snowstorm

After a very, very mild January, we finally had a much anticipated snowstorm over the weekend.  Despite the windchills of -10, the sheep were quite happy with the weather.  For the most part, they were content to remain out in the snow, and rarely sought the shelter of the barn.

Getting where you wanted to go was a bit of a challenge, as our road was not plowed until the storm was over, but we made it out and then down the old barn lane and back with a Ranger load of hay.  And of course that made everyone happy.

The only place that coming and going proved to be a real problem was in the barnyard.  The traffic snarl was a common occurance as no one wanted to veer off the beaten path.

solstice to solstice :: slumber

slumber

What use is it to slumber here;
Though the heart be sad and weary?
What use is it to slumber here
Though the day rise dark and dreary?

For that mist may break when the sun is high
And this soul forget its sorrow
And the rose ray of the closing day
May promise a brighter tomorrow.

Calendar Girl

At the urging of several friends and readers, we are considering producing a calendar for 2013.  Can you help us with some input.  Of the three photos in this post, which one would you prefer seeing in a Sheeps and Peeps Farm calendar?
Number 1 – Aurora looking at you?
Number 2 – Aurora looking at you but with more mountain scenery in the background?
Number 3 – Aurora’s profile with mountain scenery?
Please post your input in the comments.  Thank you!
