Fiber Love

We just can’t wait to get our hands into these bags of fibery goodness, received last week from Davis Ridge Fiber Farm & Mill in Nettie, West Virginia.  We met Jen and Brandon at the West Virginia Wild and Wooly Fiber Festival.   Arriving with our four large bags of fiber in tow, we were shepherdess/s on a mission.  We were thrilled to meet the Harden family, and equally thrilled that they are starting a fiber processing facility in West Virginia!  We sent our ‘four bags full’ back with them to be processed into roving, and, well, you can see the results above.
It is tough to concentrate on the holidays surrounded by all this lovely fiber; next week may well see some shepherdess/s hiding from the family to do some post-holiday spinning!

A Friday ritual.
A single photo – no words – capturing a single moment from the week.
A simple, special extraordinary moment.
A moment to pause, savor and remember.
Participating with the SouleMama blog.

We have to break the rules a bit, and introduce the newest farm girl – Lauren Ruth – Shepherdess Sharon’s granddaughter, Shepherdess Anita’s great-niece, and Harley’s little sister.

Essential Equipment

Essential winter equipment for these farmgirls

** 100% waterproof
** cold-tested down to -40 degrees
** non-slip sole that kicks away dirt

So pretty, bright and cheerful, they make us smile on even the most grey, wet, cold, miserable mornings (so far anyway).  We love these boots!
Here’s hoping that they fit our snow-shoes.
Well… honestly… here’s hoping that we won’t need our snow-shoes this winter.

Poseidon and His Girls

Poseidon is our 4-year old colored ram.  He is a Cotswald – Border Leicester – Coopworth – Wensleydale cross.  He is probably the most agressive of the rams, especially when he is in with the ewes.  He growls at us when we try to come in the gate, but is usually easily distracted.  The quickest lesson learned by a shepherd/ess is to not turn your back on a ram; especially when he is in a breeding group.  Poseidon produces an amazing fleece with long, curly locks, and his lambs do the same.

Sunny Sunday

After Saturday’s miserable weather (blowing snow, 11 degrees windchill), we were all (every one of us) searching for our spot in the sun yesterday.

Belladonna
Pumpkin

Davita

Aibreanne

Everyone, that is, except the guineas… and what were they searching for?  Well they apparently were doing some soul-searching, as they spent hours (yes, hours) Sunday morning staring at their reflections in the side barn door.

Aragorn

Aragorn is our 2-year old registered Border Leicester ram, purchased last year from Sarah Beamer.  He is the current wild child of the group, a little impatient with all the preparation and very anxious to do his job.  He produced a high percentage of twins last season; all with lovely, long, curly fleece.
